Successful people look tired. Well not so much tired as downright frazzled. It takes them a moment or two to remember the dog’s name, let alone their children’s ages. You ask them how they are and they rattle off in a dazed stupor – “Busy… wow… you know – really, really busy.” Whatever happened to “Fine… thanks for asking. How about you?” The successful people are the ones who pace at the airport or local Starbucks hooked up to their Star Trek Spock-like ears buying, selling, delegating, or pleading. They usually have the latest Wall Street Journal, Business Week or daily financials in tow lest they risk the possibility that they were not present to bear witness to every market hiccup, cough or cold.
These days, I don’t have as many chances to play sports games as I used to. Many of my sports equipment is resting on outdoor shelving in my garage, collecting dust. Nonetheless, I still get to use some of the equipment sports every now and then. The outdoor sports equipment, in particular, has been getting use this spring. The weather has been wonderful, and it has been difficult to remain inside any more than I need to. I did a lot of mountain biking, hiking, and I even got to play a friendly game of soccer. It has been good to take out the old sports equipment and try it on again.
The requirements for a would-be yachtsman are the same for any physically demanding sport. You must have a moderate level of stamina, a good degree of strength, and ample dexterity. Moreover, you must have a good sense of direction and a lead-cast stomach. While I have seen a good many candidates try-out for crew position while on-land, once they are at sea, they are unable to withstand the constant rocking of the sea. To be sure, given the right conditions, even the most seasoned sailors will feel the wrath of the sea. There is no shame in having to do what the sea compels you to do. But, if you are compelled to do so while the yacht is still in-harbor, woe is you.
Every coach in youth football has a responsibility to the kids first. It is about the experience that those kids are having and making sure that it is a positive one. The love of the game needs to be developed and while each kid isn’t going to go on and play high school or college football, each one of them will have an experience that is unique to them that they will never forget.
Lastly, as an historian I am tied in bizarre and unexplainable ways to pieces of history. I have mentioned before how I have 3 military art prints that are signed and numbered by the artist and the airmen depicted in the art work. All three are German WWII aces – Erich Hartmann, the leading ace in the world with 352 air victories, General Gunther Rall with 275 air victories and General Adolf Galland with 103 or 108 victories.
Over time, Taylor has adjusted by cutting his hair short and wearing men’s clothing. He is almost 12. But I still catch him wearing my accessories and dancing in my heels. He is comfortable in his skin.
Affecting this change can be a challenging and confusing journey. It’s a skill I have been uncovering and practicing for a few years now. In my experience as a coach I’ve discovered that this is so critical to happiness in life, that I’ve decided to devote myself to helping you establish a strong inner bond with yourself so you can truly and deeply connect with the ones you care about.
